Launch Party for Portobello People’s TV

The Muse, 269 Portobello Road | Saturday June 11th from 6pm to late. Entry FREE all night.

Delayed by Covid and illegal eviction by our landlord, Portobello Film Festival present the Launch event and screening for a new online TV channel, Portobello People’s TV, showcasing the best of Portobello/Ladbroke Grove culture drawn from the Portobello Film Festival archive of the best in independent and underground film from the past 26 years. Films to be introduced by directors. This is a very special opportunity to watch and mix with movers and shakers who put mainstream media to shame. Features work by Bella Freud and John Malkovich, Molly Dineen, Barney Platts Mills, Roger Pomphrey, JC Carrol and Ismahil Blagrove.

  • Golborne Variations

    Ex-Member JC Carrol’s prog-rock opera/love song cycle to Golborne Road and its’ denizens. Visuals directed by local comedian and dentist Simon Godley.

  • Reel Around The Fountain

    The Smiths Live in 1984 on the brink of breaking big. Filmed and edited on VHS camcorders with sound recorded by Grant Showbiz. Made as an intimate souvenir for bands and roadies and only previously seen as low res Internet broadcast in 2000 on the occasion of Rough Trade’s Anniversary Celebrations. Clips used in the How Soon Is Now video. Made by Grant, Hetty Church, and Festival director Jonathan Barnett.

  • With Or Without Fidel

    Ishmahil Blagrove’s poignant elegy to the vision and energy of Fidel Castro was made before his passing.

  • Who The F*** Is Pete Doherty

    Local legend Roger Pomphrey’s unflinching portrait of a massively talented but drug-addicted rock star hitting skid row.

  • Rootical

    Nike Hatzimidou’s doc on the life and work of local photographer Charlie Phillips who was recently honoured with the OBE.

  • Hideous Man

    Bella Freud and John Malkovich’s electrifying improvised drama with a ghost of superstars (Pallrnberg, J and E Fox, Skin, Arielle Dembasle, Shaznay from All Saints) in a crazy countercultural freak out of beat poetry, groupies, and black panthers wearing Freud’s sexy clothes.

  • Dread Broadcasting Corporation

    Early work by Molly Dineen recording Lepke Rebel DBC ‘s original pirate radio station including interview and secret footage of radio masts being erected.

  • Looking For Tomorrow

    Rare screening of Barney “Bronco Bullfrog” Platts-Mills’s Moroccan romance, made with non-professionals, also touches on illegal immigration and religious intolerance.
